We delivered our workshop on Scientific writing and publishing with impact at the request of Jami University. The format allowed ample time for exercises, discussions and the opportunity to work and reflect on sample scientific papers. We reviewed and analysed the papers and provided in-depth feedback on its contents. The feedback and the edited abstracts were presented to the participants at the workshop.
Learning objectives and exercises of the Lectures:
- Understand who the audience of a specific journal article is, what types of scientific journals there are in the natural and social sciences, and how to access them.
- Understand the role of the peer-review process and how it is organized.
- Recognize the format and rules of scientific writing in articles published in peer-reviewed journals and understand what expectations to meet in each part of an article.
- Choose “model articles” and recognize and apply some important language and other rules used in the different parts of these journal articles.
- Know how to plan the writing of an article.
Learning objectives of the “Writeshop” and coaching sessions (on location and after the training):
- Apply the structuring and language rules learned in the lectures to a manuscript currently being written or revised for submission to a specific peer-reviewed journal in the field of sustainable mountain development.
- Improve the internal argumentation of an outline or manuscript.
- Improve the manuscript’s reference to the scientific debates considered relevant.
- Learn how to provide constructive feedback on a colleague’s paper.
- Develop a personal publication strategy.
The TRAINING sessions will draw on the following materials:
- A specially designed Resource Guide,
- Discipline-specific journal articles and other texts,
- Participants’ own draft papers and their writing, revisions and editing work during the Training.
